Our
North Stars:
Zahrah Aya
|
Every Liberator needs a North Star to illuminate the path, to help them to keep up the good fight. It's been said that it is better to die standing than to live on one's knees. Of course, there is one thing better than dying standing -- living standing. Today we are asking you to be our North Star -- to illuminate our path, to help us keep up the good fight, to help The Liberator live standing. The Liberator is an independent and young institution, which is not easy in this world. Even with a volunteer staff working for love and out of passion (who also make donations) our current costs run us a little more than $3,000 each issue. But close your eyes for a second and imagine this: Over 15,000 people worldwide read The Liberator each time an issue is printed. If we could have just over sixty Liberator supporters donating just $15 each month (or perhaps a thousand Liberator supporters donating $1 each month) we could guarantee the sustainability of The Liberator entirely through the independent support of our community. This is where we need your help. We currently have thirty one North Star monthly donors, meaning we're half way there. We are asking that you help us get there by committing to making a monthly financial contribution of any amount -- as little as $1, or whatever you can give. Positive change in our world starts with dialogue and the free exchange of ideas. Without these, there would be no civil rights movement, no pan-African movement, no women's movement, no anti-apartheid movement. Simply, there would be no movements. Dr. Kelly Miller once said that we too often, "buy what we want and beg for what we need". We spend regularly on many relatively superficial desires -- $20 going out to eat here, $15 to see a movie there. We are asking you to contribute as little as $1 each month to help sustain a dynamic, independent community publication. A publication in which passionate, powerful dialogue and the free exchange of ideas are alive and well. Being independent means never being beholden to anyone but our community when it comes to what we discuss. By becoming a North Star you are helping keep The Liberator independent. If you are able to help sustain The Liberator, please contribute by becoming a monthly donor. (All donations go to printing and shipping costs.)
