Liberator 4.2
The Montreal collective known for its admiration of Morrissey, Blur and all things Brit-Pop, make noisy mini-operas, and has finally come out in the U.S. Together almost a decade, they arrive in glorious fashion. It’s brilliant. No Cities Left is a beautifully gorgeous collection of art damaged, love songs. With a NME single of the week under its belt -- "We Can Have It” -- Yankees should start paying attention. While leader Murray Lightman, the group's songwriter/singer, does a have a Morrissey fascination, it is manifested in a way that won't annoy. “We Can Have It” is a thrilling romantic love song full of sincerity. As Murray sings on the melodramatic, "Lost Pilot,” “Our love, don’t mess with our love, our love is so much stronger,” the conviction is real. "Who Are You, Defenders of the Universe?” is a sprawling epic with the refrain that ends with “I can’t help you, you can’t help me” before proclaiming, "It’s not an impossible situation.” "Pinned Together, Falling Apart" begins with a Sonic Youth like burst of distorted feedback before elegantly turning into a dramatic ballad. "Never Destroy Us” is lush, string laced '60s French pop over ringing guitars as Lightman sings, “What do you say, we can live together… never destroy us.” Among Canada’s’ best exports alongside Broken Social Scene and Arcade Fire proving that Canadians have their own Hot Hot Heat.
