Liberator 3.4
Murs 3:16
The 9th Edition

I was thinking to myself earlier about how disappointed I am in a lot of my favorite rappers. They once were the people who seemed to touch on what I was going through or the guy who made us all laugh while he cracked jokes over beats, but then to see the same people reduced to uncletomfoolery is painful to witness. Then there is Murs. I first heard of Murs through some kids from Cali who swore up and down that the Living Legends where the tightest lyrical emcees in the whole of California. Murs, a founding member of that crew, is one of the few and proud rappers who have managed to make a long career in hip hop while remaining true to self. Highly sought after beat maker 9th Wonder (Little Brother, Jay-Z) delivers smooth, hard knocking, melodic beats. There is almost a perfect balance between beats and lyrical deliverance on this album which was rare in hip hop's best of times and damn near unseen in 2004. Murs is not a fresh out of high school, backpack wearing, internet rapping chump; he’s a grown man that literally has been doing this forever (even before the internet) and it shows. His rhymes and voice display a skill level that artists can only hope to achieve the way he has, by grinding out pure, honest, emotion from the depth of his heart for years. The end product is a mix of skill and pure love for the sport. Murs and 9th blend together flawlessly, reminiscent of the people’s champions Pete Rock and CL Smooth. If you like hip hop or want to like hip hop again you should defiantly pick this one up at a local record store. And you should pay for it, because he deserves the scans.
