Liberator 4.3
I Self Devine
Self Destruction

Minneapolis’ I Self Devine steps out on his own for his debut solo record after over a decade in the game as the front man for the Micranots. I-Self strays from the metaphysical rhymes that made the Micranots an underground staple for so many years, but it leads him into the best and most personal lyrics he has ever spit. The whole of the album manages to capture the same kind of spirit and hard delivery that was found during the mid 90’s by such artists as OC and NAS. On the banger “Getcha Money On,” he shoots fire out of his mouth with “Money ain’t the root of all evil its people/ the money and the power ain’t shared to equal”. The production is split between producers Ant, Jake One, Vitamin D, and Bean One but even with different contributions this album is one coherent piece that deserves and is good enough to be listened to as a whole. One of the album's best, “Live In The Moment” features MC/hood-legend Budda Tye who lets off a barrage that would make Pac proud. This album also brings with it a certified Minnesota hood banger with “Ice Cold” where he puts the Twin Cities hoods on blast behind a heavy baseline and he answers the cut in question, "how’s Minneapolis?" The albums best and most personal track “Sunshine” is a window into his past; present and future that was written almost like a deathbed confession. It has the maturity that only comes from age and struggle and is filled with lines like “learned about money cause I tricked it/ learned about credit when a nigga got evicted” and “wanna see pop’s before I cash out/ say I love you even though your ass mashed out/ left us for broke.”
