Liberator 3.4
Amy Winehouse
Frank

Every year something interesting comes along that makes you say damn, that’s the shit I’ve been waiting for. Something special, a unique talent that’s not forced upon you with hype. Take the 19 year old from North London, who sings with a passion not heard on the R&B scene for awhile. Raised on a diet of Diana Washington and Sarah Vaughan, the young vocalist also takes lessons from Erykah Badu and Jill Scott. On her debut "Frank" she sounds like the daughter of a Harlem jazz musician. Her sexually charged vocals, honest lyrics and laidback, hip hop inspired production makes her sound contemporary without sounding like a neo-soul clone. On her first single "Stronger Than Me" she berates the so-called "sensitive new man," "I feel like a lady, and you’re my ladyboy." "In My Bed" samples Nas' "Made You Look." Meanwhile, the incendiary, torch light glow of the piano and vocal track "You Sent Me Flying," graphically captures the thrill of new love. Her candid dissection of romantic conquest, sexual betrayals--humorous. And social observations such as the pin-up one liners of "Fuck Me Pumps" give her an original on relationships. Who says soul-jazz has to suck? Sweet, sexy, refreshing, and much more deserving of great white soul phenom status than say, Joss Stone.
