Liberator 5.1
The reigning U.K. soul siren Alice Russell has built a strong reputation as the voice of Quantic Soul Orchestra, her rendition of Seven Nation Army with Nostalgia 77 as well as guest appearances with TM Juke, Roy Ayers and De La Soul. On her second album Russell, the anti-Joss Stone celebrates soul music with passion and invention. Praised by BBC tastemaker DJ Giles Peterson, she lives to the hype with ease. Along with songwriting/production partner Alex Cowan, she creates a charming, if uneven record influenced by Northern Soul, Gospel, Jazz, Electronica, Broken Beat and Blues. The opening haunting chorus on “All Else Can Wait” rivals Alicia Keys in melodrama alone, but her inspiration seems to be drawn from the tradition of Minnie Rippertons emotional heartache. Alls’ not gloom and doom, the sassy, upbeat tango strut of “Humankind” successfully merges hip- hop and swing as she ask “Can you tugg my hair and slap my behind/ I’m a whole lot of woman I want to recline”. On “To Know This” a jazzy R&B stroll that hints of Jill Scott, while the stark baroque of “I’m Just Here” suggest Fiona Apple. A delightful, seductive new voice. words: jon jon |
