Liberator 5.3
Filmmaker, scene instigator and director of
the Afro-Punk documentary, James Spooner has now compiled the first
Afro-Punk record: "Afro-Punk Vol. 1 - Fuck Rockstars!" The Afro-Punk
film inspired a global community of musicians to get up, get out and do
something. The bands represented in this compilation are defining their
new musical voice, with a wide-ranging and diverse collection from the
nu metal of Cipher and D-Fe to Minneapolis' Building Better Bombs'
"winter" drawing from Fugazi. Ricky Fitts, Yaphet Kotto and Tamar-Kali
bring the energetic conviction that inspired the film, while the hip-hop
inspired hardcore of NYC's GAME Rebellion "Maria" pays tribute to the
ghosts of Bodycount and Bad Brains. The indie spirit is also represented
here with Atlanta's The Slack Republic's quirky hit "Not Ready," McRad's
lo-fi strummer "Hesitation" and Cutlery's emo/shoegazer "A Murder in the
Shadow Cabinet." Other high points come courtesy of dubbed-out
excursions from indie vets The Eternals and Jai Alai-Savant as well as
Toronto's rabble-rousers The Carps with the soulful emo of "Drone2."
Phil Moore Browne's howling "Watch the Eggs" manages to merge the
mysticism of Screaming Jay Hawkins and the passion of Fishbone. The
record closes with Kimya Dawson folksy protest "Loose Lips." The crew at
AfroPunk.com has arrived in true punk/D.I.Y. fashion--creating,
celebrating, archiving and encouraging an emerging disparate scene in
the making. The sixteen artists here represent a glorious snapshot of a
post hip-hop nation and its many voices. |
