"The only game in many, many towns is The Liberator Magazine."

Greetings everyone,
At the beginning of 2009, we had to make a pivotal decision: Do we take the quick path of artificial inflation and seek protection under the umbrella of a financial master with loans, credit debt, and grant money? Or, do we cook this Liberator project slow and prudently, with grassroots support directly from the people?

We chose the latter. That transition took an incredible output of energy. But it's been done. Now we are solidifying this grassroots path, and we're already half way there. The Liberator is totally debt-free. And half of our printing and distribution costs are covered by donations from our current 32 North Star monthly donors.

Because you reading this are the grassroots, we need you.

Those current 32 North Stars are giving an average of $14 per month, each -- amounting to 50% of operation costs.

We need at least 32 more people to join us and at least match the average $14 a month donation that the current 32 North Star donors are contributing. Or, whatever you can give. And that would complete this effort. The long journey to grassroots stability for The Liberator would be complete, allowing us to focus our complete energies on the magazine in 2010 with some serious force.

Backstory:
In 2009 I've seen some things. Seen how challenging it is to keep a liberating publication like The Liberator alive in our communities. But I've also seen how communities can rally to reinforce the importance of liberated grassroots journalism in the face of conglomerate corporate media (and wannabes).

I've seen no shortage of talk about the coming of the digital age. But I've also seen a huge black hole when it comes to relevant and liberating media gaining ground in communities of color amidst the onslaught of specialized media online, where -- as many new media, marketing, and journalism scholars have noted -- our kids and peers can read "the news" about their favorite pop-culture subjects without ever actually reading the news. Add to that, the post office has raised postage rates three times this year alone for print publications -- with the blessings of the corporate print media conglomerates -- in an obvious attack on independent, community-supported print media.

I've seen 7 historically "Black Press" papers close down this year with no equally valuable community-based digital or print media replacing them. So, before we join the cheers to "bring on the digital age," we might consider that liberating digital media is only reaching specific segments of the population in our communities, and that our community print media is suffering worst from the general attack on independent print media. We might want to ask ourselves, what does that mean for the broad-based free exchange of underground and revolutionary ideas in our communities? Because although many of my college friends frequent sites like Henry Louis Gates' The Root online, most of the youth in my hood don't -- there is literally a flood of gossip and pop culture outlets available for fast food-like quick, emotionally satisfying consumption.

There is an ever-growing gap when it comes to the space that has traditionally been occupied by broad-based, revolutionary, liberating print media in communities of color, where informed discussions on a wide range of vital subjects are digested by a diverse community readership.

Kamille and I have seen letters from writers telling us of their essays getting accepted by other publications, until the editors actually read them and saw just how straightforward and revolutionary they were. They've told us how at many other "cultural" publications editors tried to "tone down" and edit out essential information, fearing backlash from advertisers, or financial backers, whom they did not want to offend. But I've also seen those same writers' essays published honestly and without fear in The Liberator, and digested in African communities and communities of color in England, Philadelphia, Kenya, South Africa, Minnesota, New York, Washington, Atlanta, Chicago, Uganda, Senegal, Los Angeles, Sweden and France.

I've seen media projects blow up way past The Liberator in terms of hype and attention. But I've also seen many of those same projects deflate, standing naked, revealing failed strategies of artificial inflation. On the other end of the spectrum, I've seen -- and surely you have too -- more than 500 mainstream titles with millions of subscribers and ad revenue sources fold within the last two years.

And all of this is why we need your help.

We have plenty of work ahead. We want to start an internship program for young writers and revolutionary journalists in our communities; we want to partner with more university students and faculty to broaden the reach of important scholarly conversations; we want to partner with more writers around the world to give more liberating underground artists exposure; we want to create a digital version of the magazine to be made available online; we want to produce Liberator and Live From Planet Earth t-shirts; we want to compose another Live From Planet Earth album featuring skilled, liberating musicians; and we want to continue bringing our communities more of the untold and under-told stories that need to be told and the un-had conversations that need to be had.

But first, we need to establish solid ground for this community institution by covering our printing and distribution costs.

To do that, we need you.

We need just 32 more people to join us and at least match the average $14 a month donation that the current 32 North Star donors are contributing. Or, whatever you can give.

P.S.
As we prepare to publish Liberator 8.2 (#24) we have less than $100 left to raise. Letters, comments, prayers, donations, gift subscriptions... anything you can contribute helps more than you might ever know. If you want to help us make that last push, and are not able to donate monthly, please make a one-time donation here: liberatormagazine.com/donate
