my first post dont ripe me apart
hey all
this is Jeanine for those of you who know me and those of you who dont I just wanted to comment on this article because I read a very important essay a few days ago about the expectations put on Black public figures. Basically Kenyon Farrow (who wrote the essay) stated very accurately that the US media and public LOVE to see Black public figures tearing each other apart. To the point that its a entertaining past time for not only conservatives but liberals too, its whats hot now (Bill Cosby, Juan Williams, J.L. King, Ward Connelly, John McWhorter. Not to mention this unbelievable mofo actually defending Michael Richards!). Farrow is an author and activists who gives speeches all around the country. He commented on the fact that after all of his speeches activists, progressives and liberals would always ask him "So what do you think about Condoleezza Rice?" and sit back in anticipation for him to start ripping the woman apart. "Whether right or left, the message is, if you're Black and have something shitty to say about somebody else Black, you're likely to find an appreciative (and mostly non-Black) audience". Instead of playing into the white supremacist game he chooses to state "I dont agree with her actions or policy" Its more important to spend time and energy debunking and dimantling the attitudes and institutions that perpetuate white supremacist racism, patriarchy, economic aparthid and war than to play into the hads of the people that promote oppression. In the end we are just playing their game and defeating each other. Look lets get serious, Barak Obama isnt a revolutionary, acivist, or progressive. He's a DEMOCRAT! The democratic party has failed to meet the needs of people of color for as long as I can remember. I dont expect Obama to be anything but what he is, a politician. Thats a good example of why MLK stayed out of politics. Congress is in such a horrible place right now expecially the Senate. In order to get in he had to take corporate money. He has to compromise on the things he supports and what he votes for in order to get any of his bills co-sponsored on the floor. In Congress you have to go along to get along, especially in the republican controlled congress that he entered into in 2004. Now the Democrats have a very very slight majority in the Senate but fundamentally things are going to be business as usual. True progressives need to understand that the Democratic party is NEVER going to offer us candidates that match our ideals or goals. Can you really visualize a Democratic party that is truly committed to challenging white supremacist racism, patriarchy, and economic disparages between the rich and the poor. Not with a party controlled by rich white men. It isnt going to happen. One thing I can say is that Barak Obama is the only person up there now who might run for president that is the most likely to have my people in mind when making decisions. We cannot say that about any of the other candidates. But trust me I'm not getting my hopes up. My 0.02 cents |
