[Chicago, IL] Pedagogy and Theatre of the Oppressed Conference: July 20 – 23, 2011
17th Annual Pedagogy and Theatre of the Oppressed (PTO) Conference

When: Wednesday, July 20 through Saturday, July 23, 2011
Where: Francis W. Parker School, Chicago, Illinois, USA

Keynote Speakers: PTO is so excited to announce our keynote speakers for PTO Chicago 2011 - Sanjoy Ganguly, Omi Osun Joni L. Jones, and Bill Ayers with Ryan Alexander-Tanner!

We are delighted to announce that the 17th Annual Pedagogy and Theatre of the Oppressed Conference, "We Are Each Other's Harvest," will take place in Chicago, Illinois, USA, from Wednesday, July 20th through Saturday, July 23rd, 2011 (with pre-conference and post-conference workshops TBA).

This year's PTO conference theme quotes the late Gwendolyn Brooks, Pulitzer-prize-winning poet from Chicago. In her poem entitled "Paul Robeson," Brooks writes, "[W]e are each other's harvest: we are each other's business: we are each other's magnitude and bond." Our local planning committee became excited about the potential connections between education, arts, activism, and the concept of a harvest.

Workshops will address our theme as well as one (or more) of the following in some clear way:

• Pedagogy of the Oppressed, coined and elaborated by Paulo Freire
• Theatre of the Oppressed, coined and elaborated by Augusto Boal
• Other forms of interactive arts and/or education that share PTO's goal of promoting critical thinking and social justice

Presentations might include (but will not be limited to):

• Workshops of Pedagogy of the Oppressed, Theatre of the Oppressed, or adaptations of those forms
• Case studies of Pedagogy of the Oppressed and Theatre of the Oppressed work
• Case studies of community organizing or community education projects
• Dialogues between activists, artists, and/or popular educators, etc.
• Case studies, workshops, or discussions of problem-posing education or popular education
• Explorations of issues central to oppression, oppressed peoples, or the politics of defining oppression in the first place
• Investigations of interactive performance, interactive education, and other facilitation techniques as tools for social and political engagement. We define performance broadly!
